BC DIVING TARGETED ATHLETES

June 29, 2013

BOLZANO, Italy – Celina Toth of Victoria came within a point of the bronze medal on Saturday placing fourth on women’s 10-m tower at the sixth and final stop on the FINA Grand Prix diving circuit. It was the best international result of her career.Toth was fifth heading into the final round but nearly caught the Korean scoring well on her most difficult dive an inward three and a half.“That’s always been a strong dive for me,” said Toth. “I was really happy with my performance here. I learned a lot this week.”

On women’s three-metre Emma Friesen of North Vancouver advanced to Sunday’s final placing second in her semifinal heat. The top-three from each of the two semis advance. It’s Friesen’s third Grand Prix final this season. She was also second in Puerto Rico last month and sixth in Spain.“I really struggled in the preliminaries,” said Friesen, sixth in the morning prelims at the outdoor venue.“The difference in the semis is that I competed instead of being focused on myself. I just want to keep doing that for the final.” Aimee Harrison of Winnipeg nearly joined Friesen in the final six finishing fourth in her heat for ninth overall.“I definitely didn’t have my best list in the semis,”said Harrison, 19, at her third Grand Prix this season. “My backward dive gave me a lot of problems and that’s probably what cost me a chance to advance. Still to have a really good prelims where I nailed everything is very satisfying.” Harrison was third in prelims. On men’s 10-metre tower, Maxim Bouchard of St-Constant,Que., was fourth in his semi heat for seventh overall. Fraser McKean of Ottawa was 13thin prelims. Competition ends Sunday.
